Sappho (c. 630 - c. 570 BCE), Greek lyric poet from the island of Lesbos.
Called "the Tenth Muse" by Plato. Only fragments of her nine volumes of poetry survive,
most discovered on papyrus scraps or quoted by later authors.

Note / 注: The only complete poem to survive. Quoted in full by Dionysius of Halicarnassus (1st c. BCE) as an example of the "polished style."

Deathless Aphrodite of the spangled mind, child of Zeus, who twists lures, I beg you do not break with hard pains, O lady, my heart.
But come here, if ever at another time you heard my voice from afar and heeding left your father's house of gold and came
yoking your chariot. Fair swift doves drew you over the dark earth thick-whirring their wings from the sky through mid-air.
Swiftly they arrived. You, O blessed one, smiling with your immortal face, asked what now I had suffered, and why again I called you,
and what in my maddened heart I wished most to happen: "Whom now shall I persuade to lead you back again to her love? Who, Sappho, wrongs you?
For if she flees, soon she shall pursue; if she refuses gifts, she shall give them; and if she does not love, soon she shall love even against her will."
Come to me now too, and release me from cruel cares; and all that my heart desires to accomplish, accomplish. You yourself be my ally.

Note / 注: Often called the "Ode to Jealousy" or the "Phainetai moi." Quoted in full by Longinus (1st c. CE) in On the Sublime as a masterwork of passionate expression. This fragment profoundly influenced Catullus (Poem 51) and later European love poetry.

Note / 注: This is Sappho's most famous poem and one of the greatest love poems ever written. The speaker watches the beloved talking to someone else and experiences a cascade of physical symptoms — tongue breaking, fire under the skin, blindness, ringing ears, sweating, trembling. Longinus praised it as the supreme example of how to convey overwhelming emotion through precise physical detail.
